Regina, the provincial capital of Saskatchewan, is may be the best green city in Canada that is crafted from an originally treeless plain. The region's only river, Wascana Creek, was strategically dammed to create the Wascana Lake. Hundreds of thousands of trees and shrubs were hand-planted to construct huge areas of shaded parks and sustainable green spaces. School grounds were landscaped with artificial hills to create topological interests.
Belonging to a continental climate zone, Regina has warm summers and cold, dry winters, with fluctuations to extreme temperatures over the seasons.
Today, Regina is an urban forest with excellent city infrastructures. In the heart of the city is Wascana Centre, which was built around the Wascana Lake and contains the stately Legislative building, the University of Regina, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, the Regina Conservatory, the Saskatchewan Science Centre, the Norman MacKenzie Art Gallery and the Conexus Arts Centre. Wascana Lake is also the citizens' four-season recreational area, with boating in summer and skating and toboggan-running in winter.
Farming and agricultural remain significant in Regina's economy. It handles the largest volume of Canada's wheat, canola and barley, and the industry has attracted extensive population settlements. Recently Regina has been successful with its diversification of economy, resulting in its relatively low unemployment rate.
Future urban development is undergoing much consideration and revision. Land rezoning policies are in planning, with the intention to create future urban development while keeping a balanced and sustainable agricultural land. Newer residential growth is expected mainly to the east, north, and northwest of the city.
Currently the city is generally divided into the downtown business district including the stately South Albert Street area and the Cathedral Area, the affluent Crescents areas to the northwest of Wascana Lake, the historic Germantown with the Warehouse district and the East End.
