Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia, and has the largest urban area in Atlantic Canada. It is a major economic center in Canada, and the Department of National Defence, the Port of Halifax, and industries such as agriculture, fishing, and forestry largely drive its economy. Because of its location on the Atlantic coast, Halifax usually has a mild climate. Temperatures in the winter tend to hover around -6C, while the summers usually see temperatures of around 20C. The maritime influence keeps the average temperature much cooler in the summer than other places in Canada.
One of the most respected universities in Canada is located in the city, Dalhousie University. There are also several other universities and colleges in the area, including University of King's College, and the Atlantic School of Theology, all which contribute to a very vibrant youth culture. Because of this culture, there are numerous art galleries, theatres, and museums, as well as many performance venues, and cultural attractions such as Symphony Nova Scotia, and the Neptune Theatre. Halifax is also very well known for the strength of its music scene.
While the city does not have any professional sports teams, it does have many semi-professional sport franchises, and has hosted numerous major sporting events including the World Junior Hockey Championship, and the Nokia Brier. The city also contains several parks, including the Point Pleasant Park that is popular with both locals and tourists because of its location on the peninsula, creating a beautiful forested seaside area.
